Designing with SOAPSTONE

Natural stone countertop options you may not have researched.

There are many kitchen countertop options to consider. Our team members at Earth Stone are often asked about the traits of soapstone and other natural stone options. Currently, honed materials are all the rage! Soapstone, with it’s low luster and matte finish, became a popular selection for design projects in Houston and across the United States.

Why choose soapstone countertops?

Soapstone is a nonporous and non absorbent natural stone that is stain resistant and great for kitchens and bathrooms. Appealing veins and striking movement ripple through the slabs similar to marble, with subtle color tones. Soapstone comes in a variety of grey, green, and black shades with a full range of color tones up to a deep charcoal, providing numerous design options.

Do I have to seal soapstone counters?

It is common to see soapstone sealed or oiled with mineral oil. You are not required to seal or oil soapstone countertops, though this choice results in the appearance of deeper, richer color tones. If you chose to use mineral oil, it is best to use one with a thin consistency, because of ease of application and consistent color tone.

Is soapstone a sanitary surface?

Since soapstone is nonporous, bacteria and other germs will not collect, making it easier to clean and maintain.

Can you place hot pots and pans on soapstone?

Although soapstone is heat resistant, it is never recommended to place hot items on surfaces without a trivet, since items can crack due to extreme temperature changes.

When considering countertop options, do not limit yourself to quartzite, granite, and porcelain. Investigate the features and benefits of soapstone and other less common slab options to create a kitchen that is as unique as you are.
