Natural Stone: All About Limestone

WHAT IS LIMESTONE?

Limestone is a type of sedimentary rock, made primarily of calcite. Since much of it is formed near the sea, it often contains fossils of shells and usually has some fossil fragments embedded in the stone. These particulates and fragments are compressed (and in some cases heated) over millions of years, eventually forming stone. Limestone is different from marble. Both are natural stones, though marble is a metamorphic stone and limestone is sedimentary stone.

CAN LIMESTONE BE POLISHED?

Limestone has a softer look due to its inability to be polished as much as marble or granite. Tumbled limestone is a common look due to the tumbling process softening the edges. The soft edges can provide a more casual vibe to your living space.

WHAT COLORS DOES LIMESTONE COME IN?

Limestone is generally light ivory and ranges to grey tones. Limestone rich in organic matter will be darker. Some limestone is even such a dark grey it appears nearly black. Traces of other mineral content, like iron or magnesium can also alter the material to a creamy tone.

DOES LIMESTONE NEED TO BE SEALED?

Limestone is a porous stone and can be sealed to prevent staining, or it can be left with no sealer and the stone will develop a natural patina. Generally, limestone is sealed with a saturating sealer when used for interior projects.
